Franklin was born July 1, 1843 in Providence township, Lancaster County. His father was a limeburner and for most of Frank's childhood they lived in a home on White Oak Road just west of Hwy 222 as shown on the township map published in the Bridgens Atlas of 1865. [The house is still standing and well maintained].
Frank(lin) went to Camp Cameron (Cameron was named for a government official), Harrisburg and enlisted as a Private at the formation of the 9th Cavalry on October 19, 1861. The 9th Cavalry consisted of twelve companies and Frank was assigned to Company F. Frank 's service is briefly:

Frank's older brother Ed signed up Co. D, 122nd Volunteers, Aug. 6 1862, and was discharged May 15, 1863. he enlisted with Co. F, 9th Cavalry on August 18, 1864 and served until May 29, 1865.
(Frank and Ed Reese had two other brothers who served as paid substitutes; Martin who served with the 88th Infantry and Witmer who was assigned to the 53rd Infantry.)
