Edward Reese was born June 20, 1841. His name appears in some research and records as Edmund. His gravestone inscription is Edward as is the family bible entry of his birth made by his mother.[The entry may not have been contemporaneous with his birth].
Edward signed up with Co. D, 122nd PA Volunteers, Aug. 6 1862, and was discharged May 15, 1863. He served at the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. He later served in Co. F. 9th Pa. Cavalry, 92nd regiment also known as the "Lochiel Cavalry", with his brother Franklin, during the War of the Rebellion. Ed Reese had two other brothers who served as paid substitutes; Martin who served with the 88th Infantry and Witmer who was assigned to the 53rd Infantry.)
After returning to Providence township after the war he married Amanda Winters, April 12, 1866.
. Amanda was the youngest child of Michael Winters and the cousin of Catherine Winters who married Edward's younger brother Martin. They had no childrenOn March 30, 1867 Edward purchased a tract of nine acres and eighty eight perches from Benjamin Helm and wife Martha.(Deed Book O, Vol.9,p.388) This piece of property adjoined the farm of Edward's father-in-law Michael Winters, all of which is derivative of the large holdings of Michael's grandfather Christopher Winters, Sr.
Edward was partially disabled as early as 1890 and received a pension accordingly.
Edward died in 1923 and is buried with his parents and brother Franklin and many other family members at New Providence Mennonite Cemetery. It is likely that Edward placed the markers for his parents who he is buried next to. His mother Sarah Kuhn Reese was living with him at the time of her death in 1894.
Little is known about Edward. He did enjoy his occasional cigar. In the records of Barr's store in New Providence there are entries for Edwards purchases of cigars.
