John Adair, Sr.


John was born in County Antrim, Ireland in 1725. He married Sarah Emmit daughter of Joseph. John and Sarah lived in the Mt. Joy township area of York county, PA although Sarah's family likely lived just across the border in Maryland in the vicinity of Emmitsburg.

John was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and is recognized as such in the archives of the D.A.R. John is mentioned in Vol. 2, pp. 214-216, Pennsylvania Archives, Fifth Series. Shown as number 15. under Capt. McClane, March 1st, 1776, M.W.C., Friday.(d)

In 1779 there were two taxable John Adairs in Adams county. One in Mt. Joy twp and one in Hamilton twp.

He died Dec. 29, 1806 his burial place is unknown.



John Adair

John was born April 20, 1773 in Lancaster County. On Nov. 12, 1812 he married Esther Wilson born in Lancaster County Dec. 28, 1790, dau. of Charles Wilson and Mary Weems.

John was a veteran of the War of 1812.

He died Nov. 9, 1862 in Lancaster county and might be buried near
White Oak in Penn township.

James Adair

James was born in April 15, 1827 in Penryn, about 1849 he married Susanna Badorf born July 19, 1830 at Lititz, daughter of Benjamin Badorf and Catherine Hollinger.(After Catherine's death Benjamin married her sister Rebecca.)

James Adaire Of Pennville Left Home Late At Night To Die In A Field Of Rye

On Tuesday evening at 11 p.m. James Adaire, a retired blacksmith of Pennville, Pa, Penn Township, who lived with his son, Clayton, arose from his bed and dressed, told the inmates of the house that he was going out on an errand and would shortly return. Failing to appear in due time, the family became alarmed and instituted a search, but failed to find a trace of the man that night.

On Wednesday morning 37 people of the neighborhood appeared and offered their assistance to find the missing man; every available hope was pried into near and far, but it was not until 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon when he was found dead in a field of rye on Henry Shiffer's farm shown on 1875 map of Penn twp] land, about a quarter mile from where he lived. He was lying on his face, which had already turned black and blue from exposure to the sun and heat.

The remains were removed to his home, where Deputy Coroner Stroh of Manheim, appeared and empaneled a jury with dr. J.F. Dunlap of Manheim, physician. The verdict was death from heart failure.

Mr. Adaire was 69 years old on the 15th of April last. His wife, who was Susanna Badorf, daughter of the late Benjamin Badorf of Lititz, died 9 years ago last March. thirteen children were born to the couple. Eleven sons and two daughters, of whom seven are living as follows:
John, near Lititz, Benjamin of Pennville, Albert of Terre Hill, Clayton, James of Rohrerstown, Landis, and Mrs. John Weidman of Lititz.

The funeral will take place on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. from the house at 9 at White Oak Church. deceased was a member of White Oak Reformed Denomination. Rev Charles (B?)ehler of Manheim will officiate.

DIED IN A FIELD
Sudden Death in Penn Township
James Adaire Expires on Tuesday... in a Rye Field and His Body is Not Discovered Until Wednesday Afternoon After a Long Search.

James Adaire aged sixty-nine years, a well known resident of Penn township died suddenly on Tuesday night and was found dead in a rye field by Clayton Hollinger one of a searching party of about forty men who had scoured the country in the vicinity of Pennville to find him.
Deceased had been ill for some time, and for the past two weeks was under the care of Dr. J. K. Hartz of Lexington(?).
On Tuesday evening he retired about eight o'clock, and his son Benjamin with whom he made his home heard him leaving the house about eleven o'clock. This was not regarded however as unusual as Mr. Adaire had gone out before at night to breathe the fresh air, being subject to spells of a suffocating nature.
When the family discovered that he was missing in the morning they became alarmed and a searching party containing about forty men started out to find him. They searched the clearings and woods at Speedwell and dredged Emanuel Greiner's dam, but failed to find any trace of the missing man.
About two o'clock on Wednesday afternoon Clayton Hollinger, one of the party (illegible)...on a ...and...... ................rye field when he was ....by seeing the body of the missing Adaire lying in the field about four feet from the......with his face downward in the rye. The body was immediately removed to the residence of his son about a quarter of a mile distant and Deputy Coroner Stroh of Manheim notified. The latter was accompanied by dr. J. Francis Dunlap who examined the body. Deputy Coroner Stroh empaneled a jury consisting of J.T. Weber, H.H. Witmeyer, D. Wal(?) Evans, Emanuel H. Bomberger, Cyrus Kaufman, and David Keath(?) and the verdict rendered was that death was caused by valvular disease of the heart. The funeral will be held on Saturday morning with interment at White Oak Church.


Albert Badorf Adair

Albert Badorf Adair, fifth child of James and Susanna Badorf was born in 1862 and died in 1944. He married Mary Ann Horst with whom he had 10 children. Albert was a tobacco farmer near Terre Hill.

Albert B. Adair

Albert B. Adair, eighty one, died at 4:30 at the home of his daughter Annie wife of John Koch of Ephrata R2 of a complication of diseases. He was a member of the reformed Church.

He served as sexton of Bergstrasse Church cemetery for a number of years. He is survived by these children, Magnus Adair of this city, Minnie, wife of George Koch of Lancaster R2, Albert Adair of Denver R1, Annie, wife of John Koch of Ephrata R2, also 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was the last of his family.



Annie Catherine Adair

Annie Catherine was born Aug.21, 1890, seventh child of ten. She married John Bowman Koch. Annie's older sister Minnie married John Bowman Koch's older brother George.
Annie was a home-maker and she at times worked, including several years as a seamstress at Rosenau Bros. in Ephrata (where several relatives of her daughter-in-law also worked) and raised a close knit family of 5 children.
Sunday evenings were a get together time at her home marked by the Walt Disney show on TV and plenty of ice cream.
Annie died July 8, 1967 at the home of her son Arthur in Ephrata. Annie died of a complication of illnesses and lonesomeness for her husband John who died at their home a year earlier.
