Weather Lore
Extracted and Excerpeted from Pennsylvania Dutch Folklore, Elmer L. Smith, Applied Arts Publishers, Lebanon, Pa, 1960:
If the children are boisterous, rain is coming.
A mackerel sky,
The wind will be high;
Then bring in the grain,
Close by there is rain.
If the ears of corn burst, a mild winter will follow.
If the ears of corn are plump, a cold winter will follow.
A thick husk on corn means a long, cold, hard, winter. If the ears of corn protrude from the husk,
the winter will be short and mild.
If the rooster crows at 10 p .m., it will rain before morning.
If the rooster sits on top of the fence to crow, there will be a rain storm during the day.
Early morning rain and old women's dances don't last long.
If the hair on a dog becomes heavy during the fall of the year, one may expect a long winter.
When the women hang their legs out of bed while sleeping, it is a sign that the weather is warm enough to plant corn.
If the chickens moult on the forepart of the body first, the early part of winter will be severe. If on the rear, then the end of winter will be severe.
Whatever the weather is on the fifth day of the month, so it will be the rest of the month.
Whatever the weather is like on the last Friday of the month, so it will be the following month.
When the breastbone of a goose is held up to the light, if it shows dark allover it is a sign of a long severe winter. If it is mottled, the darker spots indicate frost and the lighter spots indicate snow. A general transparency of the bone indicates an open winter. (The condition of the front part of the bone foretells the state of that season before Christmas and the other part the weather after Christmas.)
If it rains before seven, the sun will shine before eleven.
If the wind comes from the east when you start a fire, you can expect fair weather.
It will rain in the afternoon if the fields are covered with cobwebs in the morning.
If the spleen of a hog be short and thick, the winter will be short.
When snow is on the ground, if turkeys go to the field there will be a thaw.
